How to Properly Clean Your Fabric Face Masks

Fabric face masks can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19. As such, many cities, counties and even states are passing ordinances requiring employees and/or customers to wear one when they are in indoor spaces. While masks have long been worn in Asian countries, most people in the United States are not familiar with wearing a mask or caring for one. Fabric face masks are reusable, which helps to reduce the amount of trash that winds up in landfills, and reduces the amount you spend on masks. However, they need to be properly cared for or they will not be effective. Here are some tips to help you properly care for and clean your face masks.

It is important to clean fabric face masks after each use. You should not wear your mask more than one time, as it can harbor bacteria. The best way to clean three layer cotton face masks, the type of face masks we carry, is to hand wash the mask in a gentle, scent-free fabric detergent. This item is going over your face and mouth, so scent-free is important. Once you have cleaned the mask, use a pair of tongs to dip the mask in boiling hot water. The boiling water kills any germs that remain. While the mask is still on the tongs, rinse it in cold water. Wring the mask out and then lay it flat to air dry. If needed, iron the mask once it is dry.
